Review of The Double Life of Véronique (1991) by Brigid B — 23 Aug 2007
I really loved the Polish part of this film. Just that part itself would make an extraordinary short film. The French part went on for a little longer than needed but overall this a worthy film that tells its story through beautiful imagery.
I love how Kieslowski doesn't really explain much in the film through words or plot devices. After the Polish part, we expect to see some explanation of how the two Veroniques exist together. There is no real logical explanation when we see the French counterpart.
Nothing really falls right into place, which definitely might frustrate some viewers. That's not the point of the film. It's Kieslowski. He's no sci-fi director. He makes you feel. I think the rich visuals of the film, of how the two Veroniques are linked through everyday objects and actions succeeds at creating a movie about both losing and finding a part of yourself.
