Review of The Double Life of Véronique (1991) by Stephen C — 03 Oct 2010
The word masterpiece is banded around in the world of films and sometimes the film awarded the title is not very good.
But here that title is truly worth bestowing as masterdirector Kielslowski shows how great a loss his passing was after he completed the coluors Trilogy.
This film feesl like a precursor to those films but thats not to say its a lesser film far from it ,in fact its a tender work from a master craftsman at the top of his game.
Irene Jacob is stunning as Weonika/Veronique whos life is turned upside down in both parts of the film.
Kieslowski has a firm hand on the tiller here and both Polish and French episodes are packed with images of small beauty from a view from a maarble to a tape compiled of sound from Veroniques mystery suitor.
Many will say the film doesnt warp evertything up in a neat bundle but thats part of its charm and of course after all we have seen that would be a bit of a cop out .
A work of true genius I cannot recommend this highly enough.
