Review of The Devil All the Time (2020) by Coffeeorkatea — 16 Sep 2020
I read this book in the early days of Quarantine and have been looking forward to the release of this movie since. So I'm coming from this as someone who knew what I was getting into in regards to the content.
Guys ignore the critics giving this 1 stars or whatever, they're crazy, this movie was amazing. It's long, but it never felt slow to me. Maybe because I knew how fast they were breezing through it. The cuts they made I was frankly glad for, and the things they added were well done as well.
The scene with the Animal that everyone talks about was not a pointless or gratuitous thing, it was a necessary catalyst and part of the force that drove Arvin. And the acting. Holy hell, give Tom Holland an Oscar.
That boy acted entire scenes with just his eyes and his jaw muscle. It was phenomenal. The way his hands would shake or the way he'd breathe, the slightest mannerisms all contributed to him being this simmering plot that could boil over at any moment and he carried this thing.
Pattinson's accent was a bit too affected for my tastes, but his acting otherwise was fantastic. There wasn't a bad actor in this, to be honest, and it was a powerhouse. There's some gory scenes but nothing like modern day horror type of gore.
And some iffy subject matters if your sensitive to movies about things of those natures (you can look up the trigger warnings if you care). But all in all I'd watch this several more times for the acting alone.
