Review of The Damned Don't Cry (1950) by Martin T — 09 Apr 2010
Even as a Crawford fan, I have to say this is not one of her bests. FAR far too old to play this part and using old and what had become cheesy Crawford moves like the hiking up the skirt and jutted out jaw in the romantic kiss scenes, softened and veiled lens tricks to try to make her appear younger, all of this does in fact take away from what would otherwise be an interesting noir-ish story that was also otherwise well directed by Vincent Sherman and well performed by all else in the film.
On the other hand, as a Crawford fan you may also enjoy it just for the kitchy hoaky ala Crawford moves she makes in this film. I often think she may have made better choices for herself in film had they been presented to her.
At the time (and truly even now) there weren't a lot of good parts for mature older women. I would like to think HAD there been she may have not made so many films in her later years trying to play a woman in her 20s and 30s when she was in her 50s/60s.
