Review of The Crush (1993) by Rob M — 30 Aug 2017
Alicia Silverstone makes her major big screen debut in this torrid psychological thriller that is supposedly based on a true story. While the plot is riddled with teen drama cliches and some of the scenes are so over-the-top you wonder how this could have possibly happened; it does give us two believable performances.
Cary Elwes as the object of Silverstone's obsession is quite adept at playing the clueless everyman. He doesn't smolder with overt sexuality but he gives off an aura of mystery and fragility. Silverstone gives a subtly creepy performance as the deranged Darian.
Her coy innocence coupled with her voracious yearnings provide as good a teen seductress as can be expected. Kurtwood Smith adds some decent support; hamming up the screen as the doting father and Jennifer Rubin is well cast as Elwes's cautious girlfriend.
What the film lacks in believability it makes up for in strong and fun acting.
