Review of The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989) by Neville F — 03 Oct 2007
Typical Greenaway at the point where his story v style battle was still in balance. Gambon is gorgeously debauched, Queen Helen is genuinely horrified at being thrown naked into a van of rotten meat (it really was rotten and the scene took hours to shoot) and even the great Ian Dury appears as a guest.
Ultimately, Greenaway carves his own path and if you like him (I absolutely do) this is possibly his finest hour.
