Review of The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989) by Stephen L — 17 Apr 2013
A for effort but oh my god I had time getting through it. Lavish colors and gorgeous lighting effects but it had some of the most disgusting and grotesque subject matter I've seen in a movie. I have no problem with ridiculous sex or violence but the things I cannot stand are excrement, vomit, torture and mutilation and this movie had all of them including animal violence and spoiled food (The latter of which I didn't even know was one of my weaknesses).
I get that the film was trying to merge sexual appetite with literal appetite but the food wasn't photographed in a way that made me want to eat it and the character of Albert (brilliantly portrayed by Michael Gambon) by was so unbearable it made me lose what appetite I had, but you're supposed to hate him so I can't fault the movie for that.
Overall, I applaud the film but I'm not interested in seeing it again.
