Review of The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989) by Andrey B — 03 Nov 2016
I didn't like this movie. Yeah, the direction is outstanding, decorations, cinematography are on the high level. Acting is riveting especially Michael Gambon's performance. And the film is full of extravaganza that is pleasant to the eye.
But the spirit of the movie is evil, characters are rotten to their bones with sins, and they yet can blame someone else in their miseries, and what is worse, the director seems to believe in it, at least I didn't notice any kind of sarcasm or irony, and he even tries to make some morale in defense of the "less" rotten, arguing that their rottenness caused by the evil character of the movie (Albert Spica in this case), which is disgusting to observe.
