Review of The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989) by Ed Q — 31 May 2009
"The Cook.." melds theatrical and cinematic techniques into an idiosyncratic and beautiful film filled with twisted humor and indelible images. Form follows function, as the film is an exploration of the way in which gourmet food, literature, expensive clothes, and civilized discourse mask our animal behavior.
Greenaway quite literally exposes the connection between sex and food and the innate human desire to devour the competition.
