Review of The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989) by Joshua H — 09 Jan 2012
One of my favorite movies ever, The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover is not for everyone. This NC-17-rated gem caused controversy 20 years ago upon its release. It is shocking, gory, erotic, and thoroughly brilliant in its allegory for Thatcherism in '80s England.
Michael Gambon is phenomenal as "the thief", the musical score by Michael Nyman is fantastic, and the lush set design is unlike any other. If you are up for something such as this, definitely see it and let me know.
This kind of film is not something that I would normally watch more than once, but I have revisited it three times. It has a magnetic power that few films have. Director Peter Greenaway has made a masterpiece.
