Review of The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989) by Skyler B — 19 Jan 2013
A vile, gluttonous thief likes to create havoc and spewing hate and abuse in a five star restaurant which he owns and is run by a French cook. That restaurant soon becomes the setting of a love affair between his wife and a bookish lover.
The style of the film is remarkable, a feast for the eyes that takes back to the 17th century paintings and a theme that is reminiscent of the French New Wave. However, it's a cold and distant film which fails to create a connection or a situation that the viewer can genuinely care for.
