Review of The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989) by Sylvester K — 16 Jul 2013
Ok, this is the most lush interior set design, lighting and costuming I've seen since Barry Lyndon. That's saying a lot.
And Helen Mirren has quite the penchant for steamy adult roles. She doesn't disappoint here, prancing through a good bit of the film naked.
Other than that, this story drags like a ten-ton anchor. Fast forward is your friend.
SPOILER: The dental-floss thin plot line is pretty much lifted from the mythology of Atreus & Thyestes, complete with a Thyestean Feast as fin.
However the viewer will starve to death long before that meal is served.
