Review of The Conformist (1971) by Masorad ( — 16 Jun 2009
The titular character Marcelo is a windsock who blows with prevailing fascist winds and counter-winds, sent to Paris first to co-opt a former professor, and then, change of plans, to kill him. Bertolucci's film is larded with Freud and du jour intellectualism, but the cinematography is what you're really here for.
The dollies, the light and shadow, the jarring handheld in the forest, the subtle cranes, the blues and reds. The shots in the Ministry an incredible mini-movie all by itself.
