Review of The Conformist (1971) by Rod A — 23 Jul 2009
The price of fitting in with the popular crowd is never having a true self. World War II was a time when life became extremely cheap. No one knew which side would prevail. Trintignant's assassin is bound to eliminate whomever his fascist overseers direct him to, no matter what emotional connections exist.
He is a man bent on survival at any cost, he will support any movement if it's the one with the most authority. This film is a chilling reminder of how quickly members of society can turn on and destroy each other for their own petty purposes.
