Review of The Conformist (1971) by Luciano S — 27 Mar 2011
As a character study, the book is more successful because it gives us a more intimate glimpse into the twisted psyche of the protagonist and his obsessive desire to conform. But the movie still succeeds as a suspenseful and unconventional political thriller that keeps you wondering before and after each plot turn occurs.
There is also a lot to admire here from a technical viewpoint, since a number of scenes, especially the memorable climax, stand out in part due to the beautiful cinematography and art direction.
