Bernardo Bertolucci's brilliant film goes into the mind of a 1930's fascist- Marcelo Clerici. Marcelo is a fascist. Marcelo is a spy.

Set in Mussolini's Italy, Bertolucci's adaptation of Alberto Moravia's 'Il Conformiste' moves through the past and present of Marcelo's life and unravels his mind. Marcelo is given a mission- to murder a political exile- Professor Quadri.Their past and present collide, Marcelo has to confront with his past, his inhibitions, his aspirations... and thus Bertolucci unravels the 'psychology' of fascism.

Should mention here Vittorio Storaro's cinematography. His gives so much depth and life to each scene that we literally experience the cold Paris winter, the terrifying silence inside huge halls, uneasy darkness of night and cramped rooms, solitude that creates chill in the spine, and even the most minute detail of everything that appears on screen.

Brilliant.
