Review of The Conformist (1971) by Michael B — 06 Dec 2017
A favorite since the day I first saw it. Incredibly rich film rewards repeated viewings. Others have related the basic narrative so you don't need my version. This film has an odd texture and emotional tone. Sensuous elements such as the tango scene, and those of genuine terror such as the forest sequence. Trintignant gives an almost surreal edge to his character.
Cinematography as mentioned is sumptuous and functions practically as another actor.
Highly recommended.
