Review of The Color Purple (1985) by Ken S — 12 Jun 2012
Steven Spielberg made his jump from directing more light entertainment fare and popcorn movies (albeit wonderful popcorn movies) into serious drama film making with The Color Purple, and it is a quality film that proved he was much more than just "E.
T." and "Jaws". Whoopi Goldberg is great as Celie, and Oprah is surprisingly good as Sophia too. The film has a really good story, and it is beautifully shot as well. Spielberg proved his ability here, and without this film, he never would have gone on to film Schindler's List, so this film marked a turning point in his career, and while I'll always be partial to his light entertainment movies of the 80s and 90s, this is definitely a well made picture.
