Steven Spielberg smothers Alice Walker's Pulitzer-winning African American triumph novel with sentimentalism and unnecessarily lengthy, slow-burning scenes. But, this story of an African American women living in an age ruled by traditional gender norms and discrimination is powerful, nonetheless.
