Review of The Business of Being Born (2008) by Sylvia L — 04 Jun 2008
This is an excellent documentary and everyone should see it, whether or not you agree with the story and implications presented. This documentary is interesting, gives useful information you may not get from your doctor, and most importantly, has amazing coverage of natural births and women's experiences of going through the pregnancy and birthing process.
Where else can you get that? Many would discuss this film in terms of pitting home birth against the evil medical industry, but I think such a reading of the film is simplistic and inadequate. What this film does so well is present a larger picture of the context in which birthing exists while still entering one of the two most intimate spaces of human experience -- of a woman giving birth (the other being death).
This film brings dignity and recognition back to what birth used to be, naturally is -- a woman's rite of passage, and it brings back the human element into the deeply profound experience of witnessing a being enter the world.
Wow!
