Review of The Brood (1979) by Steve W — 28 Feb 2009
Effective atmospherics from David Cronenberg keep the picture treading water for a little while; but for a chronically perverse purveyor of gore, his scenes of actual violence lack any effect whatsoever.
None of them look particularly wholehearted (I'm not sure I even saw the meat cleaver connect), and even his make-up department looks like they went out and bought masks from Walgreens. Storyline plods along until Cronenberg shows his hand in the grand finale--too little, too late.
