Review of The Brood (1979) by Peter K — 16 Jul 2010
"The Brood" may be one of the creepiest movies ever made. It's not that it's scary, though there are some well-timed jolts. It's that parts of the film just make your skin crawl. Cronenberg built his reputation as an unflinching director with "Shivers," "Rabid," and "The Brood.
" Early signs of the gory genius he would employ in "The Fly" (1986) and "A History of Violence" (2005) appear in the third act. While the film has its flaws, the strength of the story bridges the rough patches.
By the time the third act arrives, Cronenberg cranks up the ick factor with a scene that still makes audiences squirm in their seats. A must-see for horror fans.
