Director Francois Truffaut's ode to Hitchcock is only modestly successful. A strong story (based on a Cornell Woolrich story) and engrossing characters, but the production values are surprisingly lackluster.

It does manage to build some effective suspense toward the end, but overall, a disappointment - maybe Truffaut just didn't have the sensibility to take on the Master of Suspense. Easily the best thing about this film is the magnificent score by Bernard Herrmann.
