Review of The Boy Next Door (2015) by Erica L — 28 May 2015
I really wanted to somewhat like this movie, just for its campy nature and "so bad its good" feeling it promoted in the trailer but it couldn't even provide that. It just was boring. When Jennifer Lopez is the best in show in a modern Lopez movie, there are huge problems with your cast.
Ryan Guzman was fine and made for a more charismatic and creepy Christian Grey than Jamie Dornan did and I expect to see more of him in Nicolas Sparks' next work. Kristen Chenoweth who I love deeply was totally miscast as Lopez's friend and co worker that is supposed to be really tough and the voice of reason but just is too herself in this.
John Corbett, who I know can act because he was great on the wonderful United States of Tara, was really cringe worthy bad and bland in this as was Lopez's son in the movie Ian Nelson. The writer could have at least made it a camp fest that generations could love to hate over time but sadly, it's just a snore.
