Review of The Blob (1988) by Kendrick S — 13 Apr 2012
Surprisingly, not a bad work!
Don't get me wrong this is NO masterpiece, but for what it is, its pretty well made and a decent popcorn flick. I can definitely say its among Chuck Russel's better films.
They stay true to the spirit of the original while taking some interesting liberties of their own especially with the creature's origins in 80's Cold War era USA.
But the real impression comes from the pretty good creature effects by Tony Gardner (practical effects at its finest!). The events leading up to the final act is where it gets a bit silly, especially when the creature's origins are made clear but throughout the film it pulls no punches, with some twists and surprisingly gory sequences, and can even surprise you in places. Not the best of its kind, but certainly better than most horror remakes I could name.
