Review of The Blob (1988) by Paul J — 23 Dec 2014
This 80's remake totally holds up. It may have cheesy dialogue and lame acting at times but the pacing is relentless and best of all the gore effects are superb. Especially considering it was at a time where most horror films were toning it down.
The Blob does so much right. Kills off important character asap, has disgusting and surprising effects and gives the heroine an awesome moment to shine. Director Russell became famous for making arguably the best Nightmare on Elm Street entry (Dream Warriors) which Frank Darabont wrote.
Not surprisingly, Russell hired him again to pen the script for this excellent B-film. Later Russell would go on to direct The Mask with Jim Carrey but writer Darabont would go on to have an incredible debut with being the writer/director on The Shawshank Redemption.
Once again, horror proves to be the best way to get your foot into the industry.
