Review of The Big Country (1958) by Jonathan R — 01 Feb 2010
Gregory Peck brings Atticus Finch to the old west, and he does a great job doing it. Peck's character brings the central interest to the movie, and his shoulders are well capable of sustaining one's interest for the long running time.
The cinematography is full of beautiful landscapes shot in a John Ford style, and the score is magnificent. The landscapes swallow up the characters, and Peck's secret seems to be understanding himself in this big country better than anyone else.
The supporting cast is fairly poorly acted, and the movie is somewhat short of subtlety. Still, I found it interesting and overall very entertaining.
