Review of The Big Country (1958) by David F — 21 Feb 2011
Takes its time getting there, but this Gregory Peck vehicle is worth the long running time. Once again, William Wyler proves himself a master storyteller, and he takes as much time as he needs to spin this yarn of dueling cattle ranchers, which is not a minute more or less.
Beautifully photographed within some stunning landscapes, with a terrific score by Jerome Moross and a towering Oscar-winning performance by Burl Ives - who has most of the best lines ("Teach your grandmother to suck eggs!") Able supporting cast includes Carroll Baker, Jean Simmons, Charlton Heston and Chuck Connors.
Long distance shots of Heston and Peck duking it out in the middle of the wilderness is almost mythic.
