Review of The Ballad of Narayama (1983) by Jeff B — 08 Apr 2009
Palme D'Or winner directed by Shohei Imamura (who won again for The Eel), it folllows a small village in Japan "some 100 years ago" as an elder grandmother nears her 70th birthday. There is an ancient ritual that when one reaches their 70th birthday they are to take a journey to Narayama and die.
It's a slow film (as many Palme D'Ors are) but it's very well done. The last 30 minutes in particular are incredible. It's not for everyone (be warned, there is man on dog action), but in the end, it's a rewarding film.
