Review of The Ballad of Narayama (1983) by Manuel S — 11 Sep 2010
The elder woman prepares for the Obasute tradition (where she is going to be left alone in the mountains until dead). The sorroundings stories talks about the life of her 19th century japanese village and family.
Social paradigms, like Obasute, are shown (family, marriage, law, ecology, sexual initiation, birth, gods) and comparison with ours is inevitable. The film has many nature shots (rivers, snakes, wind) that completes it as a poem, a ballad.
The actings are absolutely well done.
