Review of The Ballad of Narayama (1983) by Tom S — 03 Nov 2011
Almost plotless until the last thirty minutes, observing the quotidian workings of a north Japanese village, sometimes mundane, sometimes haunting. Oddly enough, when the â~plotâ(TM) picks up, the film becomes more long-winded, but one cannot leave without being hauntedâ"perhaps foreverâ"by its imagery.
The burying alive scene ranks among the most devastating Iâ(TM)ve ever seen.
