Review of The Bad and the Beautiful (1952) by Sabrina I — 20 Dec 2010
I like films about Hollywood, they are fascinating. 'The Bad and Beautiful' is similar to films like Sunset Blvd but stands on its own right. Also, it's not nearly as dark as that film though is it chock full of nastiness, backstabbing and broken dreams.
I felt the tone is different whereas Sunset Blvd plays like a horror film. This one has some upbeat moments. Kirk Douglas's performance is the highlight of this film, he plays the ruthless producer who will stop at nothing to achieve success.
At times charming, other times cunning...I wasn't sure whether to like him or hate him. A great character and a great part for Douglas. Towards the end it seems the film was trying to say without him, his friends wouldn't have gotten the success they achieved-that was a little odd.
It seemed to be like yes, he helped push them but they also worked hard. They deserve some credit too. So, I didn't totally buy that argument. Another thing I didn't exactly like is the ending.
.I guess I wish the film wasn't mostly flashbacks..I wish there was some interaction between Johnathan and his old friends. Everything would have come full circle..instead the ending is pretty meh compared to the powerhouse the rest of the film is.
But despite my minor complaints..the film was very engrossing and painted an intriguing picture of the backstage drama that went on. Now, if only I can find out which real life people these character's were based on-that would be even more fun.
