Review of The Babadook (2014) by Dustin P — 19 Aug 2015
It's a mixture of good & bad things that made for an alright film.
First of all, the acting is very good - the actors that played the mother and son both did an outstanding job. The horror mostly comes from tense moments that build into scary situations, which is very refreshing considering how most horror films are just constant jump scares and nothing more.
The bad is that it sometimes felt a bit boring and it seems to be building to a huge climax that never really pays off. The ending is a little confusing, although I believe the filmmaker was trying to let the audience decide what was really going on.
It's one of those movies that I can understand how and why people enjoy it. However, at the end of the film, I personally was left a bit disappointed and wanting more from it.
