Review of The Apartment (1960) by Luiserghio M — 19 Dec 2008
I adore this movie. I wish I could write like Billy Wilder. The screenplay is very detailed and sharp. Jack Lemmon has to be the most lovable actor of all time, and gives a performance to match even his work in Some Like It Hot.
Shirley MacLaine gives a great performance as well, and Fred MacMurray is excellent. The supporting characters are used effectively as well, particularly Sylvia and Miss Olsen. In my personal opinion, Billy Wilder is the most consistently excellent director: The Apartment, Sunset Boulevard, Some Like It Hot, Double Indemnity, The Seven Year Itch, The Lost Weekend, Sabrina, and so on.
The worst Wilder pictures I've seen are The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes, Irma la Douce, and A Foreign Affair, and they aren't even bad.
