Review of The Apartment (1960) by David B — 27 Mar 2016
This is a lemondrop in the middle of the Whitman's Sampler of romantic comedies: tart, tasty and a little sweet. I guess romantic comedy is how this is best classified, but that seems so limiting. It's also a poignant drama and a bitter satire.
Billy Wilder has made some wonderful films and this is one the best. It's also some of Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine's best work, too. Both are charming and at times heartbreaking. And as in "Some Like It Hot," Wilder ends it with a classic line and a perfect ending.
