Review of The Apartment (1960) by Chris D — 16 Jul 2010
A better than average romantic comedy with great chemistry by the leads, Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine, who are both a pleasure to watch on screen. The movie didn't quite connect completely with me, however, and I felt like it was quite slow after MacLaine's character attempts suicide.
I also didn't know what to make of Lemmon's attempts to "suicide-proof" his apartment: was this suppose to be humorous? Compared to his character in "Double Indemnity" I felt like MacMurray's character was somewhat flat and uninspiring, although I did enjoy the subtle tension between Lemmon and MacMurray.
I had the impression MacMurray's character, though, was completely unaware of Lemmon's feelings twoard MacLaine. Bottom line, a very good rom-com that anyone who appreciates the genre should see.
