Review of The Andromeda Strain (1971) by David F — 01 Feb 2010
Cerebral, technically detailed and somewhat sterile, Robert Wise's treatment of the Michael Crichton's novel detailing the threatened extinction of all life on earth from a spaceborne virus is that rare bird - a science fiction film that seems to have its feet firmly grounded in plausibility, which makes the plot all the more chilling.
Refreshingly, the team of scientists brought together to battle the extraterrestrial menace actually look and act like scientists, not actors or supermodels. Film continues to rachet up the tension right until the end while never disrespecting the audience - a good example of that fine period of time in the late sixties and early seventies where science fiction films emphasized ideas over special effects.
