You don't get much American costume drama - most movies set in the 1870s take place in the West. This is interesting, though untypical of Scorsese. At the core is the same notion as drives the resolution of Casablanca - a man gives up the love of his life because, in the end, it's the right thing to do.

(Supposedly he's manoeuvred into this by May and the rest of New York society, but also there's a hint that if he really wanted to follow Ellen to Europe, he could have.).
