Review of The Age of Innocence (1993) by Elizabeth A — 25 Feb 2009
This is movie version of Edith Wharton's book of the same title. The story itself is captivating. I was very disappointed, though, with Daniel Day Lewis' wooden portrayal of Newland Archer. Winona Ryder was very good as the trusting May Welland, and Michelle Pfeiffer portrayed Countess Olenska with just the right blend of mystery and sensuality.
The directing was passable, but the close-ups of the food or the pen or the calling card case, etc. just didn't work, even if it did work in the book. It was just out of place and distracting. All in all a good, but not great movie.
