Review of The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988) by Luke P — 29 Feb 2008
Terry Gilliam, given way too much studio money, crafted this bizarre, absurdist, sometimes surrealist little masterpiece back in 1989. Showcasing that trademark Gilliam style, this film has absolutely no restraint, from the gloriously OTT performances to the elaborate sets and physical effects, this is Gilliam at his imaginative best.
The story of Baron Munchausen is a natural fit for the sensibilities of the former Python, and this ranks as one of his better films. Meandering in parts, it never forms a truly cohesive whole, but when theres this much bonkers creativity bursting out of every frame, who really cares? Highly enjoyable.
