Review of The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988) by Anders A — 05 Jan 2015
This fairy tale for grown ups is sweet and optimistic in a way that Gilliam's dark films rarely are. Even the more cynical characters have a touch of the pixie dust about them. A visually astounding film that requires multiple viewings to absorb it all.
To truly appreciate it, I think you have to be the type of adult who secretly wishes there were really fairies. Brings a lump to my throat, and it's sheer beauty alone can make me cry. Children can find it confusing and even a bit boring- this is for adult kids, not chronological ones.
