Review of The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988) by Benjamin F — 23 Nov 2008
I've been on a bit of a Gilliam kick lately, having watched Time Bandits just a few weeks ago. Both are brilliant films, but I think Baron Munchausen edges out the Bandits by a bit, overall. The cast is great overall, and it was interesting to see Uma Thurman and Sarah Polley much earlier in their careers.
The whimsical writing feels even more consistently funny and spot-on than Time Bandits', and while the direction is similarly meandering, Gilliam gives you a wonderfully surreal, original, and fun series of settings and adventures to get lost in with the characters.
A brilliant fantasy adventure.
