Review of The Act of Killing (2012) by Munir H — 23 Feb 2014
The most painful movie I've ever had the displeasure of watching. I mean it in the best of ways. The Act of killing is one that should be never taken lightly, it's a painful event for all living beings and a universal fear.
This film IS about the genocide that took place in Indonesia in 1965, and although we do get a small history lesson, this film looks mostly at the terrible lightness the perpetrators of these unspeakable crimes take upon their actions.
In all honesty I can't decide wich is more unbearable, the actual crimes these people committed, the cultural and governmental point of view, or their blunt and unapologetic way of retelling said crimes in a lighthearted and even heroic retoric.
This type of movie is not one you watch for any entertainment value, as it has none, you watch to gain conciousness over world events, cultural viewpoints, but most of all, the human condition.
