Review of The Abyss (1989) by Terhi V — 24 Nov 2009
Flawed but still hugely watchable sci-fi. The acting veers from dodgy (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) to over-emoting from pretty much all towards the end. However Ed Harris is the main man here and he anchors James Cameron's epic a treat with, outside of The Truman Show, his best performance.
Dont bother with the cinema edit, seek out the Special Edition. The extra footage explains in more detail why there are aliens lurking at the bottom of the ocean. It plays a little Close Encounters in part and also some 2001 as well as making its own mark in the visual effects department with those nifty morphing water effects.
Blockbuster sci-fi at its flawed best.
