James Cameron wants you to know he's just as good as Spielberg and Lucas, dammit, and doesn't give a shit about your inner child (also, he thanks you for financing his hobbies). "The Abyss" plays a lot like "Close Enounters" meets "E.
T." in a dive suit with just enough Cameronesque touches (hello Biehn-stache) to make it a more than adequate pastiche.
