Review of The Abyss (1989) by Jc E — 14 Jan 2011
If there's one thing James Cameron (Avatar) knows how to do, it's create a spectacle. Unfortunately, he generally throws out social commentary with such spectacles. With 'Avatar' it was hostile colonization and environmentalism.
With this movie, it's war and nuclear weapons. Basically the first two acts have a fairly interesting narrative dwelling on a crew of divers investigating a nuclear submarine catastrophe. Then the weird alien part starts and the narrative switches focus from story to agenda.
It's really too bad, because, just as with 'Avatar', there is some great effects work here, and Ed Harris (The Rock) and Michael Biehn (Planet Terror) give it their all.
