Review of The 39 Steps (1935) by Jim O — 03 Sep 2012
I decided to start reviewing the movies of legendary director, Alfred Hitchcock. I have seen roughly 15 of his movies, and I can say, he was the king of suspense. The 39 Steps is good Hitchcock, not great...not yet. Sure it hasn't aged particularly well, but a classic is a classic.
The story is of Richard Hannay. He is falsely accused of murder, and now must go on the run. So the question is, what are The 39 Steps?
This is before Hitchcock came to America. The quality of his British movies are not as good as his American ones. But The 39 Steps has all of Hitch's trademarks. I love the way he uses Mr. Memory in the story. Clever storytelling. While not as great as his later stuff, The 39 Steps is a good cornerstone to a great upcoming career.
"What are The 39 Steps?" 8/10.
