Review of Suspicion (1941) by Leighton T — 17 Mar 2010
Despite the cop-out ending, the film builds beautifully. Slight hints here and there to begin with before we start to see what we believe to be the truth. Fontaine is brilliant and Grant shows a side of him we never see.
The glowing glass of milk scene is an amazing scene and the cinematography with a great bunch of shadows, most noticeably the web that spans the living room, is quite effective. The subtleties Hitchcock is playing with here makes for one of his more interesting efforts, and a fine character study.
It's not an instant noticeable classic like Rebecca or Psycho or Rear Window, but one of those of his you feel like you need to watch it again to see how good it really is.
