Review of Stop Making Sense (1984) by Wil H — 09 Oct 2007
It's a testament to how great The Last Waltz is that this, this almost flawless collaboration of Jonathan Demme and the Talking Heads, ISN'T my favorite concert film.
Brilliantly conceived, Stop Making Sense mirrors the bands evolution, from its early days as a RISD trio, through its CBGB heyday, right on to its expanded funk lineup of 1983 (which would prove to be its last touring incarnation) by adding band members and stage elements as it progresses, eventually filling the initially-bare Pantages stage.
I can't express how utterly disappointed I am with myself that I didn't go to this tour -- no-one knew at the time that this would be the last one. even so, had I known how mind-numbingly brilliant this production was, and with the Heads at this artistic peak, I would have kicked myself for not going even if it HADN'T been the last.
(oh, and by the way, 1999? I think this came out in 85, maybe even 84.).
