Review of Standing in the Shadows of Motown (2002) by Wil H — 03 Oct 2007
In a way, this film is massively disappointing -- considering how phenomenal the subject is, this film should be mindblowing from start to finish, and it's far from it.
BUT -- any film that assembles all the living members of the Funk Brothers (a group that you will be unable to convince me is NOT the most important group of the 20th century) rates very highly on my personal list, to put it lightly.
There are some seriously dubious perfomances here from really fantastic artists (Meshell Ndegeocello), and some seriously, surprisingly amazing performance by artists I would have never expected (Joan Osbourne), but the stars of the film are the Funk Brothers themselves -- and if you don't know who they are, watch this immediately, and discover that you can probably already sing at least 10 of their hits.
